Nail salons are scratching back at a proposal to assign them letter grades just like restaurants.
“Bringing the letter-grade system to beauty and nail salons will have a very bad impact,” warned Donald Yu, chairman of the Korean-American Nail Salon Association of New York, during the first public hearing on the plan Friday at City Hall. “[It] will put additional economic hardship onto our nail salons.”
But Yu — whose group represents about 2,000 salons in the five boroughs, Westchester and Long Island — says his members wouldn’t oppose new safety measures, such as better ventilation systems and a ban on potentially harmful chemicals.
